- Jack McCray is a legendary Patriarch of Jazz Artists of Charleston (JAC) Sadly, he just passed away, which ignited impressive published accounts about his Jazz spirit touching us. It was easy to find him, downtown, and his cool cat passion and encyclopedic history of Charleston and Jazz were pure “edutainment.” He was a remarkable communicator, including prolific writings that enlightened both beginners & stalwart music enthusiasts. He sought out, welcomed, and held the hand of many uncool budding souls and brought them into the fold of the coolest Jazzy cats. Jack McCray’s spirit is visible and lives on strong in many of us – we can hear his history and vision for the future and are inspired to propel Charleston Jazz. You can join us. - Aug 16  Review: Raw, extremely Raw Video, but hey, this was “an event.” Off-off way-off Broadway. Just when you thought Charleston was asleep, & rolled up the sidewalks on a Tuesday night… Whoop Whoop…DoTheCharleston.com danced into The Tattooed Moose. We went-marching-in with New Orleans’ “Dirty Bourbon River Show.” Naturally/organically, good ol’ Charleston’s reliable melting pot boiled over. We blew out the doors! We went old school. We furiously followed the pipers & went-marching-out to raw horns, raw video, and raw whoop whoops. - Aug 5 Roaring Twenties Hot Jazz Dance Club with “Roger Bellow’s All-Star Western Swing Band.”  Swing Dance Lesson is 7:30 – 8:30, then dance until 11pm. There is also a Holy City Blues Room! Stephen Duane says, “…cowboy up…one heck of a western shindig! We’re breakin’ out our big guns and… just cause you put your boots in the oven, that don’t make ‘em biscuits….Western Swing itself culturally began in the 20′s and 30′s in the U.S. Southwest and is similar to Gypsy Jazz. It originates from Blues, Folk, Swing, and Dixieland Jazz and is played by hot style string bands. For some examples look up Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys and/or more currently the Hot Club of Cowtown…So mount up, it’s time to ride! Supporters, his widow and daughter, and bike riders will celebrate a renewed vigor for raising awareness of the community benefits of all types of biking and sharing the road among cars and bikes. The snowball is building as we take 2 steps forward for each 1 step back (tragically 7/5/2011, Dr. Mitchell Hollon was killed, while riding his bike out of downtown. -  JULY 15 - The Palette & Palate Stroll is a creative scholarship fundraiser by the Charleston Fine Art Dealer’s Association by strolling among many fine art galleries, tasting top local chefs’ delicacies & wine. (Tickets can sell-out, $45 from 5:30-7:30) (UPDATE: AT THE STROLL: What great exercise riding bikes downtown, then strolling to Galleries gave us plenty of fresh air and healthy appetites. Sparkling water, punch, wine, tapas, bonbons, and intriguing hosts & patrons filled our people-power fuel tanks to skip to the next gallery. Wow, there were so many layers and textures bombarding ALL 5 senses! What a blend of every ”medium” of art: architecture, music, paintings, sculptures, food, wine, jewelry, clothes, the human figure ;o Even the conversation was poetic – hearing that net proceeds go to scholarships was music to my ears.
